I don’t like to write negative reviews, but I feel it’s important to share my experience. If you choose to work with this company, I strongly advise asking lots of questions, documenting who you spoke with, and following up to ensure the information you’re given is accurate. For those living in a different state and needing to reorder supplies, keeping track of everything is essential. Unfortunately, I felt I was treated dishonestly, which is disappointing. I hope this feedback helps others navigate their experience more smoothly.

I have had an extremely positive experience with this company. Testing was easy and I've been using my CPAP machine over over a year with no issues. I receive supplies on a schedule and if I do need some help they are quick to get me what I need. Can't recommend them enough if you need to navigate this process.

I stopped using my CPAP for a couple of years after it was recalled. The manufacturer sent me a replacement, but it arrived incomplete and missing key components. The original unit had been provided by Own, and I reached out to them for support. They no longer worked with the manufacturer but had a similar model still in their inventory and generously provided it to me free of charge so I could continue therapy. I highly recommend them for their customer service and commitment to patient care.

My doctor recommended them. I received an email and I prepaid $275 to avoid the hassles of claiming the expense from my insurance company. Next, I received an email with a link to a website where I was immediately required to make four kinds of financial $$$$ guarantees. It felt like I was signing a blank check with little to no explanations as to why I should feel good about that. Also, without asking me they assigned me an appointment ($$$???) tonight with a coach. How about asking me if the appointment time works for me? So, I've bailed-out due to the $$$$ guarantees that I do not understand and rude appointment setting practice with no idea what the coaching session does or does not cost. On the phone this afternoon, they promptly agreed to refund my $275 prepay.

AVOID THIS COMPANY. This company does not stand behind their commitment to service you once you purchase their overpriced devices and accessory maintenance plans. I received my device and starter mask with the understanding that I would be able to try out the mask and if it didn’t work, I would be able to get a one-time replacement. The reality is, in order to get the replacement, you have to schedule a coaching session with a sleep coach. That’s fair on the surface, but what they don’t tell you is that it will be weeks out in order to get an appointment - which means that if you have extreme discomfort or pain with the mask they provided, you are out of luck. The other problem is getting them to actually show up for the appointments. I scheduled an appointment but received no e-mail or te

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Own Sleep Medicine

What does Own Sleep Medicine do?

Own Sleep Medicine is a sleep medicine clinic in Kansas City, MO that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Own Sleep Medicine?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Own Sleep Medicine directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Own Sleep Medicine?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Own Sleep Medicine?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
