I don’t normally leave negative reviews because I believe everyone has bad days and shouldn’t be judged by them. However, this is not just one bad day. I want to warn people of some practices happening at Barker sleep Institute. Here are some things I’ve learned and I think you should know from the last three years being a patient at Barker sleep Institute. 1. I have sleep apnea. I was diagnosed in 2023 at barker sleep institute. Dr. Barker required me (and I believe all patients) to undergo yearly sleep studies. I am doing very well with my current treatment. “ Current AASM guidelines specifically recommend against repeat sleep studies for asymptomatic patients who are doing well with their PAP treatment.”(Caples et al) 2. I felt much better with my current treatment. When told I needed

I am very pleased with the care I have received from Dr.Barker and her staff. I feel Dr.Barker genuinely cares about the well being of her patients and at times it is necessary to be point blank about taking care of yourself. She has always been calm and patient making sure I have all my questions answered before leaving. All of her staff have been very kind, including the night shift staff that works during the sleep studies. The office and the rooms for sleep studies are always very clean. The beds and rooms are very comfortable. My quality of life has improved under her care. As for the insurance issues some have encountered in other reviews I have read, please keep in mind that it is the insurance companies taking forever to approve authorization. Dr Barker and her staff have no contro

Went in for a consultation on 6-3-25 after being referred here by my ENT. As of 9-21-25, there has been no follow-up call to inform me on whether or not my sleep study was approved/what the next steps are. Despite not hearing anything, I keep being sent the copay bill in the mail. So they have it together enough to bill me, even though I basically received no services. I have never had a doctor’s office just not contact me after a consultation. Have no idea what’s going on or why I never heard anything, but can’t say I’d recommend this sleep center based on my experience so far. Extremely unprofessional.

The personal treatment was not right. My wife was called by this office and told that they took our insurance. They set the appointment. We came. Following the initial appointment THEY said that they would call us back when our insurance apporoved the study. THEY called us with the good news (after about 2 to 2.5 weeks) that we were approved. To make a long story short....we were not approved according to BlueCross. We found this out after almost four months of accumulated bills (by-the-way, not one time did we receive a bill until today at the office). I tried to speak with Mrs. Barker today and she became hostile with me and asked us to leave. She said this is not how this works...we came to her and she said she provides health services only... I simply wanted to know who was th

Loved the doctor. But after the first consultation waited over a month to have a pre-authorization to be submitted to my insurance so that I could have a sleep study done. I had to contact my insurance company and listened on three-way for my insurance company to request an authorization request. My insurance rep had no more luck talking to anyone more than I did. Communication with the office is horrendous. Barker sleep study is critically under staffed. Another issue is that I have been doubled billed. When addressing this issue I have had to call Barker's billing only to submit proof of payment as the billing office refused to contact the Barker Sleep Study billing team....apparently communication between the personal that collects the money and the personal that does the billing do not

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Barker Sleep Institute

What does Barker Sleep Institute do?

Barker Sleep Institute is a sleep medicine clinic in Knoxville, TN that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Barker Sleep Institute?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Barker Sleep Institute directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Barker Sleep Institute?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Barker Sleep Institute?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
