Absolutely terrible experience(s). I would not come back here again. I had a very difficult time scheduling an appointment, it actually took weeks. Finally when I had an appointment they said I was taken off the schedule due to over booking, but no one got ahold of me...so I left work early and made the long trip for nothing. They did reschedule me, however they ended up calling me the day before to reschedule. When I finally came in for an appointment, the staff( including front office, nurse practitioner and doctor) was rude, cold, unhelpful & acted like I was wasting THEIR time. I was asked to repeat the same information multiple times . The only good thing here is the valet. The valet crew is absolutely wonderful , very nice.

My old allergist retired and I unfortunately needed to get a new one. I’m so thankful I know what a good allergist is, because this place isn’t it. Every appointment I scheduled they have tried to change the times on me the day of. The office staff is rude and I wait for the allergist for over an hour every time. If you know you fall behind, don’t schedule as many appointments. Will be finding a different group if I ever have to go back.

I scheduled an appointment for an allergy test. 10 days before that appointment I received a message to schedule my allergy test. When I called to see what was going on I was informed my appointment was not in their system, despite having been prescribed a nasal antihistamine to replace my daily zyrtec. I was to receive a call back and did not. When I was billed for the first consultation (at the rate for a specialist) I noticed that I had been rescheduled without anyone ever contacting me about the appointment. I called to ensure it was a real appointment and it was. I live 1 hour and 20 min from the Pittsburgh office. I left my house 2 hours before the appointment, on a day where there was a flood watch. It took me more than 2 hours due to traffic which I really hit only in the last 6 m

My allergist had asked me to get a test here STAT on 2/2/22, I was told that I could not make an appointment until they had the referral faxed to them by the office, never mind that I had I had a copy in hand for them. I was also told that someone would get back to me within 24-48 hours. When they did get back to me, they couldn’t schedule the appointment because they never received the fax. I made sure I had the right fax number multiple times, yet this happened 3 times. The 4th time they never even bothered to call me back. I have been seeing my doctor for nearly 6 years and they consistently prove to be responsible and timely. One of the assistants there faxed the referral 4 times in two months while I was on the phone, and every single time the center said they never got it. It is IMPO

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center

What does UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center do?

UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center is a sleep medicine clinic in Pittsburgh, PA that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
