Dr. Stern is compassionate, caring, and thorough. My first visit was so pleasant because of Dr. Stern and his wonderful staff. Seeing a new doctor for the first time can be stressful for the patient, but not at this office. I know I am in good hands here!

Nothing but wonderful things to say about the staff here. The Dr here help me understand all the benefits with getting a CPAP including some I did not even dream of. Very thorough with results and was great through the entire experience. The person I'd like to spotlight is miss CiCi. She was a stellar human being and absolute Rockstar. Incredibly detail oriented, did a wonderful job reaching out and getting info and communicating with the VA to a list of other things I wont mention because I'll be here all day. I genuinely hope that AR&SM truly know what a rare commodity you have in CiCi because she deserves a raise and then some! She has officially set a bar that I can't imagine being surpassed. Thank you once again to everyone in your office, it has been an absolute pleasure!

2nd visit to Dr. Stern and I really respect him and enjoy having him as part of my care team. I have never felt rushed and any concerns or questions were addressed and explained thoroughly. Dr. Stern was very pleasant and easy to chat with. The ladies that have assisted me with getting signed in, scheduling my appointments and testing with my initial visit were so awesome. These ladies were pleasant, helpful and patience. I couldn’t ask for a better experience.

Dr. Stern and his phenomenal staff have absolutely changed my life for the better!!! After having a sleep study done in 2018, I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy with Cataplexy and Dr. Stern assured me that he would do absolutely everything in his power to see that my quality of life got as close to "back to normal" as possible, and he truly has!!! He is extremely professional but he's also very down to earth, easy to talk to, and 100% not judgemental in the slightest! The office staff in the Hickory location and also the Huntersville location are just phenomenal! They are prompt, they follow up on things super fast and, like Dr. Stern, they do everything in their power to make things as easy as they can for their patients. I feel like I've come to know the Hickory staff somewhat well, and I a

What to expect at a sleep study appointment
For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.
Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine
What does Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine do?
Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine is a sleep medicine clinic in Hickory, NC that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.
Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine?
Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.
How much does a sleep study cost at Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine?
Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.
Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?
Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.
How long does it take to get sleep study results?
Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.
Can I do the sleep study at home?
Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.
What should I bring to my appointment at Advanced Respiratory and Sleep Medicine?
Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
