I had an overnight sleep study scheduled for 8:30 p.m. and arrived at approximately 8:15 p.m., 15 minutes early. When I scheduled the appointment, I specifically asked whether I needed to bring my CPAP machine or mask and was told that I did not. After I arrived, the sleep technician asked where my CPAP machine and mask were. I explained that I had followed the instructions I was given. She told me she would have to locate a mask and that it would take longer to prepare me, so she decided to hook up another patient first. She left my room and never returned for over an hour. During that entire time, no one checked on me, explained the delay, or gave me any update. I could hear conversation and laughter from the other room, but no one acknowledged that I was still waiting. I live with PTSD,

Got an appointment same week, got there checked in and was seen on time. Front desk was very professional and the doctors were amazing. Best experience I’ve had in a medical office in a long time.

dr. barot was honestly very unwelcoming & not all that professional. he would ask me my symptoms of my migraines & vertigo attacks, i would begin to tell him, & he would cut me off, roll his eyes as if anything coming out of my mouth was a bother, & move onto the next question. i kept having to backtrack & continue w/ i was saying in order to give him an actual true history of everything i’d been dealing w/ since i was 6-7yrs old (now almost 28). it got to the point where he would ask me a question, let me get maybe 5 words in, cut me off, that i had to turn to cutting him off & raise my voice to let it be known that i was not done explaining the genuine struggle & pain i’ve been dealing w/ in regards to my vertigo & migraines for the past 10+ yrs. he also would slam the door every time he

I was present as a support person during a neurology visit and was shocked by the lack of professionalism. The provider repeatedly interrupted, rolled his eyes, and dismissed long standing symptoms without meaningful discussion. There was no clear plan for evaluation or imaging for the symptoms my partner brought up, instead the provider recommended a sleep study and prescribed medications. The visit felt rushed and dismissive, with a heavy push toward a sleep study rather than addressing the reason for referral. Very disheartening.

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers

What does Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers do?

Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers is a sleep medicine clinic in Suffolk, VA that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Virginia Neurology & Sleep Centers?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
