I work as a Medical Assistant in a sleep medicine doctors office. Jeff Carmichael is THE BEST. He is our go to contact person when we have any patient issues or concerns. Jeff is always available to help and goes above and beyond for the patients. He is so helpful and Total Respiratory is lucky to have him as a part of their team. Jeff is and asset!! Thank you Jeff for everything you do :)

Jeff Carmichael is one of the most professional, proactive, and accommodating personsI have dealt with in a long time! I had been having issues with another sleep apnea supply company for just under 6 months, they were terrible in all aspects. But my son's doctor referred us to Total Respiratory the day before Christmas 2025, and by Wednesday, New Year's eve, we had received ALL of his supplies! Just days versus the many months of jumping through hoops and getting no where with that other absolutely terrible company! I spoke with Mr. Jeff on the phone only a few times and we received so much professionalism, kindness, compassion, he listened, and not realizing how much of a blessing he would be to me and my son's previous torment basically! Mr. Jeff was so very accommodating, it seemed lik

I regret not changing who does my supplies months ago, but I was promised by a local person it would be fixed. Yet, another order and it is wrong still. I would recommend finding someone else to do your supplies. Out of two years of ordering from here, it has been correct a total of 2 times. Then after its wrong, I have to drive and return wrong supplies and pick up from local office, how does that make any sense for a consumer experience?

Horrific! My provider sent them a referral in April, and I received a phone call from Jeff Carmack, saying they would submit it to my insurance company and call me back by the end of the week. In June, after no communication from them - but an approval letter from my insurance - I called Jeff again to ask about the delay. He promised to call me back by the end of the day. The following week, after no communication again, I called Jeff once more. He promised to call me with an update by the end of the day. He also tried to tell me that he knew it was hard to understand the process. I then told him I was a Registered Nurse with over 45 years in healthcare, many of them in leadership in Utilization/Case Management. It is now July, and I have never heard back from Jeff or anyone else from thi

I was overcharged for supplies at my initial visit. When I reached out to them for a correction, twice over email and twice via phone call, I was ignored. Make sure to look at your bill and check other sources before purchasing (I found most of the exact branded supplies on Amazon for half or more than they charged me and my insurance company).

What to expect at a sleep study appointment
For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.
Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Total Respiratory
What does Total Respiratory do?
Total Respiratory is a sleep medicine clinic in Carmel, IN that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.
Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Total Respiratory?
Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Total Respiratory directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.
How much does a sleep study cost at Total Respiratory?
Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.
Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?
Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.
How long does it take to get sleep study results?
Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.
Can I do the sleep study at home?
Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.
What should I bring to my appointment at Total Respiratory?
Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
