When I initially moved to the area, I was already diagnosed with sleep apnea and had a CPAP. It took a while to establish care here, but eventually I made it in and got prescriptions for my supplies and went on with my life. A couple years passed and I stopped tolerating my CPAP. I continued to use it but was barely sleeping because the pressure was just too high. They fiddled with it a little, but in the end there just wasn't a pressure that felt comfortable enough for me to sleep through the night. I asked if there were any alternatives to the CPAP and was flat out told no, there weren't other options. I knew there were other options out there so I requested to see another provider. After months of waiting I was told the we thing, that I had no other options and to just tolerate the CPAP

This sleep center felt like a complete money grab. I paid more than $1,500 out of pocket for an in-home sleep test. Afterward, the nurse practitioner told me I needed a hospital sleep study costing another $5,000. If she believed an in-lab test was required, she should have said so before having me do (and pay for) the home test. Who wants to pay twice? Even though she already had my sleep report, she refused to give me a CPAP prescription unless I paid another $200 for an in-office visit just to “discuss results.” I have a high-deductible plan, so every dollar came out of my own pocket. There was no transparency and no consideration for cost-conscious patients. I ended up going with Lofta, got a home test($150), CPAP prescription (free), and affordable online consultations for $40. Finally got a referral for a sleep consultation. I don't know if I was assigned to the wrong doctor or what. I gave as much information as I could because I've had problems with my sleep for years. Dr Rodgers was a jerk and didn't care to dig deeper into my problem. Not happy at all. Highly disappointed in this experience. Probably won't pursue this any more. Thanks for nothing SSM.

By far the worst experience I've ever had in healthcare. After seeing Doctor Petersen, I waited over ten minutes before a nurse (hereon “nurse A”) initially entered the room to review paperwork; soon after, the nurse was replaced by another (hereon “nurse B”) who did not introduce herself or knock. Upon nurse A telling nurse B I was reading through the document, nurse B made a condescending remark to the effect of, “Just don’t do drugs,” delivered in a hasty and dismissive tone, along with an inquiry of whether I would sign it or not. When I stated I would sign the form after I finished reading it, I was pressured to hurry and told the room was needed for another patient. My concerns with the paperwork were brushed off with generalized comments like “it’s all federally required” and “as l

The front desk staff need better training. Almost every time I have to call over the past 10 years they are rude and unpleasant. I requested a zoom appointment for my son because he has autism and anxiety and they are always running behind- which makes him very anxious and he tries to leave. They refused to set it up via Zoom stating the provider doesn't do that. So after waiting over 40 minutes past our scheduled appointment time in a room, having had to try and keep my som from leaving five times- the provider said she does Zoom appointments! 🤯 The provider is good, and said she would talk to the front desk and made a note in his chart. Basically if the front desk is telling you anything weird or being difficult- ignore them. Message your provider directly vis MyChart and ask for what y

What to expect at a sleep study appointment
For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.
Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center
What does SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center do?
SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center is a sleep medicine clinic in Fitchburg, WI that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.
Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center?
Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.
How much does a sleep study cost at SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center?
Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.
Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?
Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.
How long does it take to get sleep study results?
Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.
Can I do the sleep study at home?
Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.
What should I bring to my appointment at SSM Health St. Mary's Sleep Center?
Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
