A big big thank you to Brenda the supervisor who works in the McAllen office. I tried for almost 3 weeks to get an authorization for my insurance to get one of my medications filled through the Weslaco office and was not able to do it. I never even got a call back. In one day Brenda took care of everything and was able to get my prescription. This is typically a great office in both locations but Brenda is one of the employees that makes it a really great place.

If zero stars were an option, I’d choose that. This is the second time I’ve waited nearly two hours to see Dr. J. Pean. I arrived at 11:30 a.m. for an 11:40 appointment. Vitals weren’t taken until 12:10. I wasn’t taken to a room until 1:10. The tech was efficient, but Dr. Pean didn’t come in until 1:30 — and the entire visit lasted barely two minutes. When I mentioned the two‑hour wait, he simply asked if I was “okay” and about ER visits. No acknowledgment of the delay, no explanation. This isn’t a one‑off. It’s a pattern. Either the staff has no awareness of wait times, or Dr. Pean is consistently running far behind. Patients deserve better than this. One more warning: after I raised the same concern during a previous visit, he documented that I was a “difficult patient” — simply for poin

I went in to see Dr. Gomez for a chronic cough i had for over 2 months. He explained everything extremely well. Gave me a plan to follow. I felt a lot better the next day. All the staff that helped me was very pleasant.

I understand some of the lower reviews about wait times. As a licensed professional I get it. Crises happen in the moment and pulmonology is often involved due to critical care. I started working with this office as well as the McAllen office late last year due to insomnia initially. Dr. Kaplan, his team, and actually me. A doctor that wants to listen to understand takes time. In my field we often get 90 to 120 minutes to develop a full life history in order to diagnose and treat mental health disorders. I view a late doctor as a thorough one and wait times means high demand, not revolving door business. Anywho, this location is by far their busiest and houses most of their lab equipment so they are very busy. Just bring a book or a pillow and something to drink. It always just depends on

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley

What does Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley do?

Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley is a sleep medicine clinic in McAllen, TX that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Pulmonary and Sleep Center of the Valley?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
