I came to see Dr. Teruel at the Head Pain Institute regarding my jaw pain, and I had a really good experience. They provided me with splints to wear and gave me helpful guidance on how to take care of my condition. I’ve noticed a significant reduction in my pain since starting the treatment. One thing I really appreciated was that they accept a large number of insurance companies, which made it much easier for me to find good coverage and get the care I needed. Dr. Teruel was very knowledgeable, caring, and supportive throughout the process. I also want to mention Ally from the team, who was incredibly helpful. She took the time to ask detailed questions about my pain and symptoms and made me feel heard and comfortable throughout the visit. Overall, I truly felt well taken care of. Highl

I was came to be treated for TMJ with limited opening. I appreciated that this office accepts insurance and the staff were very friendly and efficient. I was able to get an appointment quickly and although I waited about 15 extra minutes to be called back, that did not bother me. Unfortunately, my experience with the doctor was not as positive. I did not feel that my concerns were fully heard and I didn't leave comforted. Surgery was mentioned before I had even been examined, which I admit, raised my anxiety because I was due to have knee surgery the following month. During the examination, the Dr. tried to forcefully open my mouth and I was then told that I would need trigger point injections at every area that caused discomfort, which appeared to be more than 15 locations, based on what

I recently went to HPI to get a new night time appliance. Jaliyah, Michaela and Ana were really wonderful. They were very careful with cleanliness and hygiene which I so appreciated. Jaliyah spent a great deal of time fitting my appliance and trying to make sure it was right. All three were concerned to do a good job and get me what I needed and wanted. Their hard work and dedication really shined through!

Dr. Teruel is amazing! She’s kind and very knowledgable. You can tell she cares about her patients just by the amount of time she spends with you listening to what brought you to see her in the first place. Her team is just as kind and compassionate.

What to expect at a sleep study appointment
For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.
Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Head Pain Institute
What does Head Pain Institute do?
Head Pain Institute is a sleep medicine clinic in Scottsdale, AZ that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.
Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Head Pain Institute?
Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Head Pain Institute directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.
How much does a sleep study cost at Head Pain Institute?
Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.
Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?
Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.
How long does it take to get sleep study results?
Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.
Can I do the sleep study at home?
Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.
What should I bring to my appointment at Head Pain Institute?
Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
