They always say my husband has “mild” sleep apnea. He just went completely and permanently blind in his right eye due to lack of oxygen to his optic nerve. He went there yesterday with his “sleep card”. He now needs to wait for another sleep study. Cleveland Clinic and Harvard state that this is an emergency. He could lose sight in his other eye. He has NAION.. Why is this place not being PROACTIVE and refusing to give my husband a sleep machine with Oxygen to PREVENT this from happening to his other eye. All the red tape and insurance BS should be cut through and his sight should be saved in his other eye. How about give us the option to PAY for a better sleep machine until insurance will pay?! Also this is considered an emergency condition when somebody goes blind from lack of oxygen to

After reading the reviews, I was worried about the quality of care that I would receive here. However, I could not have been more pleased! Both the nurse who took my vitals and did my intake as well as the nurse practioner who saw me (Warren) were extremely competent and professional. I would highly recommend the Central Maine Sleep Center to my family and friends.

This place is an absolute joke. I waited for an appointment since November and finally had it scheduled for June after they kept denying getting my referral. They scheduled it as a phone call for 10:40. At 10:45, I called them at 795-7522 and was told by Cathy that noone had tried to call me yet, but I was next on the list to receive a call and it could be up to another 15 minutes. My one and only phone number was confirmed. At 11:05 I called again, got Cathy again, and was told to wait while they checked with the provider. Then Jessica came on the line and told me I was going to be a no show because they had tried to call me and it went to voice mail. They said the main office number 795-7522 actually goes to a call center (despite the secretary answering as them), not their office, so th

I have been a patient for five years and am very satisfied. I didn't want to believe that sleep apnea was a problem. They were very patient and explained he data that showed what was happening. Because of that, my life has changed in a positive way. The staff is professional and also attentive. They are able to function in spite of my crazy sense of humor. I am also impressed with how they personalize treatment for me. I have seen big improvements in a number of areas of my life due to their treatment.

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Central Maine Sleep Center

What does Central Maine Sleep Center do?

Central Maine Sleep Center is a sleep medicine clinic in Lewiston, ME that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Central Maine Sleep Center?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Central Maine Sleep Center directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Central Maine Sleep Center?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Central Maine Sleep Center?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
