Most frustrating process to go through. Doctor created referral. Scheduled for appointment earliest availability 5 months. Received mail from clinic with a multi-page questionnaire. Waited 5 months and went to the sleep place on Crystal springs. PA quickly went over questionnaire. Checked vitals. Told me they were going to schedule a "sleep study". They would call me back for scheduling. They called me back and left voicemail to call them back. Called back the next day and no answer (8:15 am). Called back about 2 hours later and got a person. She said that they are making scheduling calls now and that i should hang up and they will call me back. They called me back a few hours later. Now i am scheduled for "sleep study" - earliest appointment i could get was three months la

Be careful of this whole con job. Wife has been milked for everything she's worth over this scam. Went to family Dr who sent her to naff who sent her here who sent her to get cpap. She didn't even really need it but this place didn't inform us of that. Now we're most likely going to be stuck paying for a machine we don't even need. They didn't take no money the day of the study, but ripped us for 250 a month later. Total ripoff!

I have had my CPAP for over 15 years. My Nuerologist then ran a running prescription so I could get a new mask once a year. Even though I was eligible through insurance for a new mask every 6 months. I wish I had taken advantage of that...I have visited the "New" office since his retirement. They require I come in every year to tell me to use my mask. I use it every night! I need a new mask and they will not renew my subscription without an office visit. I just bought a new mask online for $37...Copay and time waiting to see doctor...I am way ahead! Goodbye Carillion!

I’m having to redo a sleep study because in-clinic was too stressful for me, so I’m trying to get a sleep study scheduled for at home. They won’t call me to schedule it and when I call they aren’t there to do it but they won’t let me schedule it online. They also don’t have a way to mail it to people like me who have to rely on the RADAR bus, etc. For reference it’s an at-home kit I have to come in to pick up and go back in to turn it in.

We tried to call so many times to talk to them, no one answered the phone. We just want to talk to them so we can set up the insurance properly. No matter what day or time no one answered the ph.

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Carilion Clinic Sleep Center

What does Carilion Clinic Sleep Center do?

Carilion Clinic Sleep Center is a sleep medicine clinic in Roanoke, VA that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Carilion Clinic Sleep Center?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Carilion Clinic Sleep Center directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Carilion Clinic Sleep Center?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Carilion Clinic Sleep Center?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
