I had a disappointing experience with this office related to billing practices and transparency. During my initial visit, I was not informed of the need to contact my insurance provider regarding coverage and costs for a sleep study. However, when I returned for a follow-up appointment to pick up the sleep study, I was told at that time that I needed to call my insurance to determine pricing. Had this been communicated during the first visit, I would have made a more informed decision and likely would not have scheduled the follow-up appointment. Despite no services being rendered during the follow-up visit, I was still billed for the appointment. This lack of upfront communication and billing for a visit where no actual care or service was provided is concerning. I encourage the practic

I’m really happy I found this doctor. They were quick to get me in, transparent about the whole process, and have helped me get my sleep back on track. I am very grateful for everyone I have met on this team. They are all incredibly helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend this office, especially if you are nervous about meeting new providers.

After what seemed like years of having the rudest front office staff and the absolute worst “office manager” if that’s what you want to call her, they finally hired someone who knew what she was doing and knew how to properly treat patients with respect and compassion instead of being clueless, rude and stuck up with a bunch of attitude. It was a nice change having someone with a pleasant demeanor around who knew what she was doing. But I guess once the “office manager” came back they decided to get rid of the collections manger because I went in for my appointment on Thursday and she wasn’t there. I called her on Friday and she wasn’t there. It’s a shame they decided to keep the one they did because she’s the one that needed to go. The other one was way better.

Beyond awful! Should have no stars! They are charging me for a CPAP monthly but won't tell me how much it cost in total. They didn't tell me how much it cost when they gave it to me. And they charge me separately for the humidifier that is in the machine and it cost way more than I could buy it for myself. When I have called to ask how much the machine cost so I can figure out how long I have to pay them monthly they tell me I have to call insurance. But insurance can't tell me how much it cost and tells me that's something the provider can tell me. I'm just being blindly charged for a machine. This is nuts! And the staff is rude!

We had a sleep study completed at this office. The staff is so friendly, goes the extra mile to help with any questions you may have. Prior to the testing, Doctor was informative, took the time to really break down the information to us, and was empathetic toward said concerns. I felt a relief in our similar beliefs vs. feeling unheard or just like a number (like some offices can feel). The office is clean & well organized. -I will add the patient was a child and they go above & beyond to make them comfortable throughout the entire appointment. Highly recommend!

What to expect at a sleep study appointment

For an in-lab study, you arrive in the evening and sleep in a private room while sensors record breathing, oxygen, heart rhythm and body movement. For a home sleep test, the clinic gives you a portable kit you use in your own bed. Neither test is painful. Results are usually compiled into a physician report within one to two weeks, and the clinic then discusses whether treatment — such as CPAP therapy or an oral appliance — is needed.

Preparation basics: avoid caffeine in the afternoon, skip lotions and hair products, bring comfortable sleepwear, and take your regular medications unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Frequently asked questions about Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens

What does Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens do?

Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens is a sleep medicine clinic in Athens, GA that evaluates and treats sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, chronic insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy. Evaluation usually involves a sleep study, and treatment may include CPAP therapy, an oral appliance, or behavioral therapy depending on the diagnosis.

Do I need a referral to book a sleep study at Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens?

Many insurance plans require a referral or prior authorization before covering a sleep study. Requirements vary by insurer and by clinic, so contact Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens directly using the phone number on this page and ask what your plan needs.

How much does a sleep study cost at Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens?

Sleep study costs vary widely with the type of test, your insurance plan and your deductible. Home sleep tests generally cost less than in-lab studies. Ask the clinic for an itemized estimate and check with your insurer about in-network rates before booking.

Does insurance cover sleep studies and CPAP treatment?

Most US insurers, including Medicare, cover sleep studies and CPAP therapy when they are medically necessary and properly documented. Coverage details — deductibles, co-pays and supply replacement schedules — differ by plan, so verify with your insurer and the clinic.

How long does it take to get sleep study results?

Typically one to two weeks. A sleep physician reviews the recorded data and writes a report, after which the clinic discusses the findings and any recommended treatment with you.

Can I do the sleep study at home?

Possibly. Home sleep apnea tests suit many adults with a high likelihood of obstructive sleep apnea and no major heart or lung conditions. If your symptoms are complex or the home test is negative despite strong symptoms, an in-lab study is usually the next step. The clinic can determine which option fits you.

What should I bring to my appointment at Athena Medical Clinic and Sleep Medicine Associates of Athens?

Comfortable sleepwear, your photo ID and insurance card, a list of current medications, and your own pillow if that helps you sleep. Avoid caffeine after midday and skip lotions or hair products, because sensors attach better to clean skin.
